The greatest strength of the new euro banknotes actually lies in the combination of the security features, some of which have already proved effective in many national banknotes.

The euro banknotes are printed on pure cotton paper, which gives them a unique feel. Some parts on the front of the banknotes are printed in relief so that the banknotes can be identified by touch

Security features 200 Eur note

1 - Watermark
When the banknote is held up to the light, a picture and the value of the banknote become visible.

2 - Security thread
When the banknote is held up to the light, a dark line becomes visible.

3 - Foil Patch
On the front (right-hand side) of the high-value banknotes (EUR 50, 100, 200 and 500) there is a hologram foil patch. When the banknote is tilted, an image of the architectural motif and the value of the banknote appear.

4 - Colour-shifting ink
The EUR 50, 100, 200 and 500 banknotes have a colour-shifting ink feature. When the banknote is tilted, the value numerals change colour from purple to olive green or brown.

UV Flouroescence:

Ultra Violet inks are used in the printing process of the note. The security thread and special colors of the note are visible when the note is lighted by an UV light making the note difficult to falsificate.

Infreared features

The latest feature in the banknote printing process is represented by the INFRA-RED ink. It's use has increased in the last years, since the properties of this special ink make the banknote difficult to falsificate. The IR ink, not visible at naked eye, can only be seen by lighting the note with an infra-red light.
